ILS advocates the use of Thunderbird and Bates Webmail as supported e-mail programs. In order to provide a secure SSH application that functions very similarly to both Elm and Pine e-mail programs, and supports digital signature capability, ILS is switching to supporting Mutt.

Open Putty on the PC, or Terminal on the Mac:

A. With SSH session open, at login prompt:

  1. Type in Bates username
  2. Press Enter
  3. Type in network password
  4. Press Enter
  5. At the abacus.bates.edu> prompt type mutt

B. On the Mac, using Terminal command line:

  1. login with Bates username and password
  2. at the abacus.bates.edu> prompt type in mutt

C. Some Comparisons with Pine and Elm:

  1. Inbox index messages are displayed by default
  2. Press enter to view a message
  3. Saves text attachments like pine
D. Use Key commands such as:
  1. d = delete
  2. m = mail, then:
  3. control/x
    followed by y
    then s to send
  4. j = move down in index
  5. k = move up in index
  6. c = change directory
  7. r = reply to message
  8. s = save message
  9. space bar to view a message
  10. type ? for a complete list of commands

Similar to other programs when you type q for quit, the program asks if you want to purge or delete those marked. Type logout when session is done.
