Program Notes
Athletes are expected to set challenging yet achievable individual and team goals. It is up to each member of the team to work towards those goals with guidance from the coaching staff. The program also emphasizes the importance of finding balance in life. Student-athletes are expected to establish priorities with their commitment to academics first. Beyond that they need to be committed to the goals and objectives of the cross country team. This is an environment that allows athletes and coaches develop a relationship of mutual respect, and provides each student-athlete the opportunity to excel academically and athletically. The season begins with several open invitationals in September and early October. The championship portion of the season lasts about a month, with the team vying for Open New England, State of Maine, New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and ECAC titles before competing for a spot at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Championship at the New England Regional Championship.
2006 Recap Bates retained its fair share of talent for 2006, beginning with senior tri-captain Steve Monsulick (Kents Hill, Maine), an individual qualifer for the NCAA Championship as a freshman in 2003 who began to come on strong toward the tail end of the 2005 season, winning the ECAC Championships at Harkness Memorial State Park in Connecticut in 25:19, one second better than the course mark and 29 seconds ahead of second-place Ryan Wells of SUNY Oneonta. This year he was named All-NESCAC second team for his impressive performances at Open New Englands, the State meet where he was first place overall, and first for Bates at the NESCAC championships. Other returning All-ECAC performers included juniors Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) and Andrew Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.). Juniors Alex Whalen (South Salem, N.Y.) and Harrison Little (Hanover, N.H.), and sophomore C.J. Murray (North Andover, Mass.) returned as proven high finishers from 2005, while first-years Dylan McGuffin (Northfield, N.H.) and Conor Welch (Newburyport, Mass.) show exceptional promise. As a team Bates was very competitive at every major meet, finishing 12th out of 45 teams in the New England Regional NCAA Division III Championships. They also placed 13th out of 40 teams at the ECAC Championships, and were the second ranked team in the state of Maine. |
