CUMBERLAND, Maine -- Led by All-New England performances from its two captains, the Bates College men's cross country team took 10th place out of 48 teams Saturday at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Maine at Twinbrook Recreation Area.

The Bobcats scored 233 points, not far behind eighth-place Tufts (194) or ninth-place Southern Maine (200). Wesleyan was 11th with 284 points.

Junior Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) earned All-New England honors (top 35 at the meet) for the second straight year, finishing the 8-kilometer course in 25:52.5, good for 17th place overall out of 323 competitors.

Senior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) also earned his second career All-New England honors with a career-best 27th-place showing, in a time of 26:10.4.

Senior Conor Welch (Newburyport, Mass.), competing for the first time in several weeks since a minor injury had sidelined him, submitted a very strong performance, finishing 46th in 26:28.6. Junior Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) was 61st in 26:46.7, followed by sophomore Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) in 82nd (27:05.8), first-year Ryan Rice (Franklin, Mass.) in 84th (27:09.6) and first-year Andrew Wortham (Newton, Mass.) in 109th (27:28.6).

Dilts narrowly missed the chance to compete at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
