Bobcats 19th at NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship

Dan Johnson was the fourth NESCAC runner to cross the finish line on Saturday.
COLFAX, Wis. – Dan Johnson finished 48th in a field of 215 runners to lead Bates to 19th place at the 2004 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship at Whitetail Golf Course on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson '06 (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) finished the eight-kilometer course in 25:28.5, just under a minute behind the individual winner, Wartburg's Josh Moen. Joel Anderson '05 (New Brighton, Minn.) was 101st for the Bobcats, 32 seconds behind Johnson. Steve Monsulick '07 (Kents Hill, Maine), an individual qualifier for last year/'s NCAA championship, finished 115th in 26:07.7.

Mike Downing '05 (Gorham, Maine) capped his cross country career by finishing 149th in 26:34.7, while Matt Biggart '06 (Cheshire, Conn.) rounded out the scoring for Bates in 175th. Rookies Harrison Little '08 (Hanover, N.H.) and Matt Dunlap '08 (Farmington, Maine) got their first taste of NCAA championship competition, finishing 200th and 206th, respectively.

Calvin won the championship with 107 points, 30 ahead of second-place North Central. Calvin placed three runners in the top 20, finishing with a 1-5 spread of less than 20 seconds.

Tufts led the New England region, finishing sixth with 223 points. Neal Holtsculte led Williams to ninth with a second place finish, while Bates finished just two points behind the College of New Jersey for 19th. The Bobcats edged Keene State, which finished 32 points ahead of Bates at the New England Regional Championship.
