Dale Bruning Trio to Perform at Bates

The innovative Dale Bruning Trio will present a jazz concert at Bates College on March 2 at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Concert Hall.

The trio, composed of Bruning of Longmont, Colo., on guitar, Sam Sherry of Cape Elizabeth on bass and Steve Grover of Augusta, winner of the 1994 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz/BMI Jazz Composers Competition, on drums, will perform a variety of jazz standards as well as original compositions by Bruning.

A guitarist, composer and music educator for more than 40 years, Bruning has performed with such artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Marian McPartland and Dave McKenna. In recent years, he has played with Mike Abbott, Paul Warburton and Jim Hall and has just released a new recording, “Tomorrow’s Reflections.”

Bruning was chosen as “Best Area Guitarist” by the Denver Post Music Polls from 1983-86. Guitar legend Jim Hall said of his peer: “Dale Bruning is a marvelous man, a marvelous friend and a marvelous guitar player. That kind of sums it up.”

In addition to teaching individual students and leading dozens of workshops, Bruning has taught in the guitar departments at the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley and the University of Colorado at Denver.

Bruning and Jude Hibbler, photojournalist and owner of Jazz Link Enterprises, will offer a workshop, “Self-Promotion Through Media and Concepts of Jazz Improvisation,” on March 2 from 1-4 p.m in room 243 of the Olin Arts Center. Admission is $8, and further information can be obtained by calling John Smedley at 786-6323.
