Theater at Bates stages six performances of "The Ugly Ducklings"

Theater at Bates will stage the world premiere of Carolyn Gage's "The Ugly Ducklings" at 6 p.m. on September 26 in Gannett Theater. Lauren Todd, a Bates junior from Cherry Valley, Mass., is directing the drama about the destructive effects of homophobia on girls and young women. The play also will be performed at 6 p.m. on Sept. 27, 2 p.m. on Sept. 28, 8 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 4, and 2 p.m. on Oct. 5. Tickets are $2 for general admission and may be purchased at the box office. Bates Modern Dancers to stage concert

Julie Groom-Thompson, executive director of the Maine Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, and David Kuhns, a physician's assistant who has treated land-mine victims in Afghanistan as a member of Doctors Without Borders, will give a presentation on land-mine eradication at 7 p.m., Sept. 22, in the Edmund S.
