'Narrative Quilts' opens at Bates Museum of Art

Artist Michael Cummings will discuss his "Narrative Quilts" exhibit at the Bates College Museum of Art at 7 p.m. on Jan. 9 in Room 104 of the Olin Arts Center, 75 Russell St. A reception for the artist, cosponsored by the African-American Studies Program at Bates, will immediately follow in the Museum of Art. The public is invited and admission is free.

Statement of presidents of the New England Small College Athletic Conference

At our annual winter meeting on December 16, we, the eleven college presidents, reaffirmed our strong commitment to the Conference and to its principles of academic and athletic balance. We considered the appropriateness of post-season play and affirmed it. Continued team and individual competition in NCAA championships is still under active consideration.

'Anne Frank Remembered' opens foreign film series

Anne Frank Remembered, the Academy Award-winning documentary about the Jewish teenager whose famous diary made her a symbol of the Holocaust, will be shown Jan. 10 at 7 p.m., and Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. in Room 105 of the Olin Arts Center at Bates College. Directed by Jon Blair and narrated by Kenneth Branagh and Glenn Close, Anne Frank Remembered (rated PG) is the first of four films in the 1998 Spring Foreign Film Series, sponsored by L/A Arts and the Bates Student Film Board. Blum to deliver Philip J. Otis Lecture at Bates

Arlene Blum, mountaineer, biochemist and author of Annapurna: A Woman's Place, will deliver a lecture titled, Across the Himalaya and Beyond: Peoples, Passes and Possibilities, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 in Chase Hall Lounge. The public is invited to attend the annual Philip J. Otis Lecture and admission is free.

Christmas performance at Bates canceled

A musical review of traditional Christmas songs by the L-A Entertainment and Production Company scheduled at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 and Dec. 13, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall has been canceled.

Russian arms control expert to speak on military reform and law
