Jazz Band to perform big-band concert

The Bates Jazz Band performs a full program of big band jazz March 23 at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Under the direction of Mark Manduca, a member of the Bates applied music faculty, the group features the performances of six graduating Bates seniors, including pianist Ethan Rowe of South Hero, Vt.; tenor saxophonist Thaddeus Carlson of Middlebury, Vt.; bassist Nils van Otterloo of Marblehead, Mass.; alto saxophonist Charlotte Swol of Blandford, Mass.; trombonist Steve Toomey of Bolton, Conn.; and trumpeters Meredith Haviland of Beverly, Mass., and Alan Brown of Gloucester, Mass.

The concert includes arrangements and compositions of both local and national artists, including Craig Skeffington, instrumental music director at South Portland High School; Terry White, band director at Bonny Eagle High School in Buxton; and South Portland native Chris Marsh. The ensemble also will perform arrangements by Sammy Nestico and Jay Chattawy.
