Please note that the recently distributed Bates College Calendar for the 1999 winter and spring terms includes three scheduled concerts that have been canceled. Performances by pianist Richard Goode and violinist Marcia Goode scheduled for Jan. 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall have been canceled. In addition, a Jan. 22 performance at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center by soprano Christina Astrachan, accompanied by pianist Mark Howard, also has been canceled.

WRBC-91.5 FM, the 120-watt, commercial-free, student-run radio station at Bates College, will celebrate its 40th year of broadcasting with Raised on Radio, an on-air trip down memory lane with past and present WRBC announcers Saturday, Dec. 12, from noon to 4:30 p.m.

Bates has received its largest gift ever from a bequest by the late Charles F. and Evelyn M. Phillips. Phillips was the fourth president of Bates having served from 1944-66.

The L/A Children's Chorus, under the direction of Brian Franck, will perform a concert of holiday music at Bates on Friday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. Admission is $8 at the door. Please call 207-782-5241 for more information.

John Edgar Wideman, two-time winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award, will address Bates College as the keynote speaker for Bates' Martin Luther King Day celebration on Monday, Jan. 18, at 10:30 a.m. in the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building.

William Hinton, author of the acclaimed book "Fanshen: A Documentary of Revolution in a Chinese Village," will discuss "Suspended Revolution: Long Bow Village Fifty Years" on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 4:10 p.m. in Skelton Lounge of Chase Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
