Haitian and Lewiston artists exhibit at Bates Mill Center

The Bates College Multicultural Center and the Creative Photographic Arts Center of Maine are sponsoring an art exhibit, "Two Voices from the Diaspora," now through March 24. "Move San" ("Bad Blood") by Haitian painter Joseph Eddy Pierre and "African Elements" by weaver and mixed-media artist Joanna Boley-Lee, a Lewiston resident and director of the affirmative action office at Bates College, comprise the Creative Photographic Arts Center exhibition on the fourth floor of the Bates Mill Enterprise, 59 Canal St. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bates College senior wins two national awards for Lewiston community garden project

Bates College senior Kirsten Walter of Los Gatos, Calif., has been chosen as a recipient of the 2000 national Campus Compact Howard R. Swearer Humanitarian Award and the 2000 Gleistman Foundation's Michael Schwerner Activist Award, both in recognition of the 1999 Hillview Community Garden project she developed in Lewiston.

Physicist who slowed the speed of light to speak

Lene Vestergaard Hau, a Danish physicist who stunned the global scientific community by slowing the speed of light in a Harvard University research laboratory, will discuss her work at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 26, in Chase Hall Lounge, Bates College. The public is invited to attend without charge.

Researchers from the Human Genome Project to speak at Bates

Ruth Hubbard, Richard Lewontin and Philip Reilly, scientists from the Human Genome Project, will discuss the medical, social, legal and ethical implications of their research at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 23, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, Bates College. The public is invited to attend the Muskie Millennial Series lecture free of charge.

Mr. China's Son to discuss China

During a visit to Bates College, acclaimed Chinese author He Liyi will read from his autobiographical works at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, in Hirasawa Lounge of Chase Hall and show a slide presentation of his native Yunnan province at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, March 16, in the Keck Classroom, G52, of Pettengill Hall. The public is invited to attend both of these events free of charge.

Chilean activist and poet to speak

Bates senior to stage "Driven"

Bates senior theater major Kathleen Wyatt of Braintree, Mass., will stage her performance art piece "Driven" amidst a collection of Holocaust-related photographic ensembles at 4:15 p.m. Friday, March 10, in the Bates College Museum of Art. The public is invited to attend without charge.

Violinist and pianist to perform at Bates

The Toasters to perform at Bates

In a show appropriate for all ages, the Toasters, a New York City ska band, will perform at Bates College at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 18, in the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building. Mrs. SKAnnotto, a ska/reggae/punk group with Bates College roots, also will perform.
