Four named Bates College trustees

Geraldine FitzGerald of New York City and Jeffrey D. Sturgis of Minot, Maine, have been elected to the Board of Overseers by the alumni body; Karen Harris of South Portland, Maine, and Carole Segal of Winnetka, Ill., have been appointed to serve on the bicameral board of trustees at Bates College, announced President Donald W. Harward.

Bates receives $1.3 million grant for science education

Bates College has received a $1.3 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the nation’s largest private supporter of science education from elementary school through postdoctoral studies.

Education professor wins teaching award

Brunswick resident Anne Wescott Dodd, chair of the Department of Education at Bates College, has received the 2000 Kroepsch Award for Excellence in Teaching. The two-part award includes a $1,000 prize and a $1,500 discretionary fund to support Dodd’s teaching.

Lakeside concert series to be held at Bates

The Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series will present five Thursday evening musical performances at the open-air Florence Keigwin Amphitheater overlooking Lake Andrews behind the Olin Arts Center. All concerts begin at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
