Art majors' exhibition opens at Museum of Art

In photographs, sculpture, ceramics, prints and paintings in a variety of media, 15 art majors cap their college careers with the popular Annual Senior Exhibition, opening with a reception at 7 p.m. Friday, April 4. The exhibit at the Museum of Art runs through May 25 and is open to the public at no charge.

Collaborations distinguish gamelan concerts

In Olin Arts Center Concert Hall performances a week apart, Indonesian-style orchestra breaks new ground for the Maine music scene. A concert at 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, pairs the Gamelan Mawar Mekar with the Bates College Orchestra, a collaboration that may well be Maine's first between the traditional Indonesian form and a Western-style orchestra.
Five Bobcats will All-America awards

The 2002-03 winter sports season was extremely successful for five student-athletes. Kelley Puglisi (Scotia, N.Y.), Jesse Carney (Harpswell, Maine), Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.), Vanessa Williamson (Auburn, Maine) and Kara Seaton (Wayne, Pa.) all earned All-America accolades at their respective national championship events.
Mount David Summit celebrates student academic achievement

A cavalcade of academic stars is ready to dazzle the College community and campus visitors at the second annual Mount David Summit, noon-8 p.m. Sunday, March 30.?? More than 100 students, working in 22 disciplines with 40 professors and assistants in instruction, will present poster displays, panel talks, artistic and musical performances and multimedia offerings at Pettengill Hall and other campus locations.

West Coast indie bands to rock for WRBC

To celebrate the end of the academic year, WRBC-FM presents three up-and-coming independent bands in concert: Hella, The Quails and The Aislers Set. This concert sponsored by the college radio station will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 30, in the Benjamin Mays Center, 95 Russell St. The show is free and open to the public.
Alumnus Matt Tavares, children's book author-illustrator, gives talk

The art department presents a slide talk by Matt Tavares, a member of the class of 1997 and the author-illustrator of the children's book Zachary's Ball, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in Room 104, Olin Arts Center, 75 Russell Street. The talk is open to the public at no cost.
Anti-racist activist Time Wise to speak

Timothy J. Wise, a prominent social-justice activist and commentator, presents a lecture titled Beyond Tolerance: Race and Power in an Age of Backlash at 4:15 p.m. Friday, March 28, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The event is free and open to the public. The talk will touch on the role of race in the war with Iraq and in the anti-war movement.
French writer-actor, director presents one-man performance

Known for their work in the French cinema and theater, the husband-wife team of Pierre-Olivier Scotto and Martine Feldmann present an original play and workshop. Scotto's one-man performance of his play Voyage au Pays de Molière (Voyage to the Country of Molière), directed by Feldmann, takes place at 8 p.m. Monday, March 31. The three-hour workshop is at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 1.
