Lena Sene '00 is among 14 White House Fellows appointed for 2006-07, the White House recently announced.

Bates library schedules mock disaster and recovery for June 23

The Bates College library staff will hold a mock disaster and recovery of library materials at 10:30 a.m. on June 23 in the outdoor lower arcade of the George and Helen Ladd Library. The event, led by Melissa Straw, a graduate intern studying book and paper conservation at the University of Texas-Austin, will give the staff of Ladd library and the Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library real-world experience in quickly and efficiently recovering from a water-based disaster with guidance from a trained book conservator.

Harward Center awards faculty and staff grants for partnership projects

Seven Bates College faculty and staff have been awarded Harward Center grants in the inaugural round of a new, annual funding program by the Harward Center For Community Partnerships. The grants, awarded competitively by a selection committee, are designed to offer faculty and staff significant support for publicly engaged teaching, research, cultural and other community projects. Seven projects — five led by faculty and two by Bates staff members — received grants totaling $33,500.

And roaming a shadowy habitat between myth, hucksterism and science are still others -- for example, Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.

Sixth annual Clean Sweep sale to benefit environment, local nonprofits

Clean Sweep, Bates College's sixth annual "garage sale" of electronics, furnishings and other goods donated by departing students, takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the college's Underhill Arena, 145 Russell St. Proceeds from the sale benefit local nonprofit organizations. The sale is open to the public, and members of the public are also invited to donate items and/or volunteer to staff the event. After 21 years with the Bates College Athletic Department, Director of Athletics Suzanne Coffey has announced her resignation to become athletic director at Amherst College in Amherst, Mass.

John A. Tagliabue memorial minute

For John Tagliabue, who devoted 36 years to Bates as teacher, colleague, friend, raconteur and poet laureate, neither a memorial minute, nor even two voices, begins to suffice. Everyone who knew him has their favorite John stories, inadequately represented here. But we hope you'll indulge us in rather more than a minute and remember this renowned American poet by reading his poems again or for the first time.

John Tagliabue, professor emeritus of English, dies at 82

Professor Emeritus of English John A. Tagliabue, a member of the Bates faculty from 1953 to 1989 and author of six books of poetry, including New and Selected Poems, 1942-1997 (National Poetry Foundation, 1998), died May 31 in Providence, R.I., where he had lived with his wife, Grace, since 1998.
