The Bates College Modern Dance Company offers "Departure Point," its annual spring concert of new works, in four performances from April 3 through April 6. The Friday performance follows the Mount David Summit, Bates' annual showcase of student achievement in academics, creative work and community-based research.

Mount David Summit highlights student research across disciplines

The eighth annual Mount David Summit, Bates College's annual celebration of student academic achievement, takes place April 3. More than 280 students are participating in this year's summit. In concurrent sessions throughout the afternoon at Pettengill Hall, participants present research posters, short talks, panel discussions, a photography exhibition and film screenings.

Bates Jazz Band to perform

Directed by Maine pianist Thomas Snow, the Bates College Jazz Band will perform on April 1. The Bates Jazz Band is a full big band of Bates students that performs at least one concert per semester in a wide variety of styles.

Bates students to perform 'Closer,' play that became 2004 film

Bates students perform Closer, Patrick Marber's critically acclaimed dissection of love and lust, on April 4, 8 and 9. The performers are students in Katalin Vecsey's "Advanced Voice and Speech" course, a study of vocal and physical techniques in the exploration of theatrical texts. Her students study characterization through voice and speech, perform cold readings, and assess and prepare for the vocal demands of different roles.

Bates students present digital music concert

Students in Chris Bailey's "Computers, Music and the Arts" course perform their compositions on April 7. The course is a hands-on study of music-making with computers and is designed for arts students who want to learn about new technological tools. This performance is based on the genre "musique concrete," or music made from found sounds, such as the hum of a dryer.

Screening features films by 'Acting and Directing for the Camera' class

Students in the Bates course "Acting and Directing for the Camera" screen their class projects on April 3. The projects are scenes adapted from well-known motion pictures such as Armageddon, 28 Days Later, Juno, Bridget Jones' Diary and American Beauty.
