State Legislature, North Pole skier help Outing Club celebrate 90th

Founded to get students out of doors during the long Maine winter, the Bates Outing Club celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. Two events this week kicking off the organization's yearlong birthday celebration. The Maine Legislature honored the student organization with a Legislative Sentiment on Tuesday, Jan. 26, during a ceremony at the State House. Later in the week, Tyler Fish, a Bates alumnus and one of the first Americans to complete an unsupported cross-country ski expedition to the North Pole, visits the college to discuss this grueling journey at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave.

Brooks Quimby takes on Yale, hosts tournament

The atmosphere in the College Chapel was one of excitement on Jan. 21 as the Brooks Quimby Debate Council held its annual public debate against rival Yale. Anticipation ran high, given Quimby's long tradition of excellence and Yale's current position as the world's top-ranked American team. Accordingly, a large and enthusiastic contingent of Bates students, both debaters and non-debaters, attended. The audience included Bates President Elaine Tuttle Hansen and a group of Yale supporters.

Religion professor receives NEH grant for 'identity terms' research

"Identity terms" are the words that people use to affiliate themselves and others with particular groups — ethnic, racial, religious, social and so on. Cynthia Baker, associate professor of religious studies at Bates, recently received $50,400 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support her research into one of history's most fraught identity terms: "Jew," a word that can convey praise, pride, prejudice or pure description.

King Day keynote looks at Mays '20 and his hopes for integrated church
