Commencement message: Don’t compare yourself to others, says journalist Pauley

"I saw this headline," renowned television journalist Jane Pauley told the 455 members of the Bates College class of 2010: " 'Inspiration is everywhere, but you have to be looking.' May you find inspiration everywhere you look." Pauley was one of five honorary degree recipients at the College's 144th commencement ceremony.

Leadership program provides skills for success

Building Essential Skills for Tomorrow -- aka B.E.S.T. -- was an eight-session program dedicated to teaching Bates students such leadership skills as networking, time management, networking and public speaking.

Museum of Art offers summer retrospective by noted painter Nicoletti

A summer exhibition examining the career of Joseph Nicoletti, one of Maine's foremost realist painters, opens with a lecture by the artist and reception at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at the Bates College Museum of Art. Joseph Nicoletti: A Retrospective runs through Sept. 25.

Two Bates seniors, an alumnus receive Fulbright awards

Thanks to English Teaching Assistantships from the federal Fulbright Program, two Bates College seniors and a Bates alumnus will teach English overseas starting next fall. The Fulbright recipients are Avery Masters, a senior from Mill Valley, Calif., who will teach in Spain; Maura McGee, a senior from Manchester, N.H., who will teach in France; and Corey Pattison, a 2009 graduate now living in Gaza who will head for Indonesia.

Bates, Colby and Bowdoin have focused their traditional rivalries on a good cause. The three schools are vying to see which can gather the most donated textbooks for donation to the Polytechnic University of Kabul, in Afghanistan.

Bates announces Commencement 2010 honorands, speakers

The 2010 Bates honorands are: Rennie Harris, the choreographer who brought hip hop to the mainstream world of dance; James McCarthy, a scientist recognized internationally for helping to communicate the science of climate change; Jane Pauley, the veteran television journalist; Elizabeth Strout, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and 1977 Bates graduate; and Teresa Woodruff, a researcher responsible for pioneering work in the care of women who will become infertile due to cancer treatment.
