Summer Newsletter 2011: Learning Commons / Writing at Bates

Peer Writing Center

Learning Commons

The professional and student staff of Writing at Bates, the Math and Statistics Workshop, Ladd Library, the Help Desk, the Digital Media Studios, the Imaging and Computing Center and other academic support services are coordinating their work as members of the Learning Commons. With the appointment of Hillory Oakes as director of the Learning Commons, and with planners hired to design a Learning Commons space in Ladd Library, this exciting project will present a unified contact point on campus for students seeking peer feedback on academic work, and for faculty seeking to consult with colleagues about course and assignment design.

Writing at Bates

We welcome Lauren Vedal as our new writing specialist in the humanities and social sciences. With a doctorate in English from the University of Wisconsin, Lauren brings many years of experience with working in writing centers, mentoring student tutors and assisting faculty with their courses.

Peer writing assistants continue to expand their work by offering assistance for students rehearsing oral presentations, creating PowerPoint slides or designing posters. Take advantage of this service by dropping by Ladd Library. Faculty can contact Joanne Cole to learn more about helping their students prepare for such projects.
