Summer Newsletter 2011: Spanish

Afroz Baig '11 Spain

Along with the other foreign language programs, Spanish has moved to the newly renovated Roger Williams Hall, where you’ll find us on the third floor.

Back from sabbatical is Lecturer in Spanish David George. Continuing faculty are Professor Francisca López, and associate professors Baltasar Fra-Molinero, Matthew Pettway and Claudia Aburto Guzmán. The four professors are all members of the Latin American Studies Group (LASG), and Baltasar also teaches in the Program in African American Cultural Studies.

Faculty involved in the LASG co-host, together with the Bates College Museum of Art, an exhibition of work by the Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo in September. Francisca hosts Spanish writer José Ovejero in November.

Claudia is the new head of the Spanish program. She is lead organizer of the second annual Translations poetry festival, which takes place Oct. 25–29 and is hosted by faculty in Spanish and the other languages. New for this year, the event includes a conference on the topic of translation in addition to the readings by poets from several different countries.

Also in October, Claudia hosts visits by Ed McCullough, geographer and cartographer of migrant crossings in the desert of Sonora, and Debbi McCullough, social artist and human rights activist.
