Summer Newsletter 2011: Dean of Students Update

Short Term Campus Scenes May 2008
We have a few changes to our staff to report.

As we announced in June, Carl Steidel has joined us as assistant dean of students for sophomores and student conduct. Carl comes to us with five years of professional student affairs experience, most recently from Cornell University, where as assistant dean of the Alice Cook House he served in a number of advising, programming and student conduct roles. Carl’s office is in Lane Hall, Room 103, so please stop by to welcome him to Bates.

Sarah Noyes, student activities and residence life assistant for the past three years, has moved on to begin full-time graduate study. Carrie Murphey ’06, housing coordinator and residence life assistant for the past two years, has left to pursue a graduate degree as well. We are grateful for what Sarah and Carrie brought to our department, and we were fortunate to have such exceptional individuals in these positions.

We’re excited to announce that we have hired two outstanding people to step into these roles. Lee Seguin comes to us after graduating from Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. Lee is the new student activities coordinator and residence life assistant.

Mina Beveney, our new housing coordinator and residence life assistant, recently completed her undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College. Lee and Mina each held a number of student life leadership positions as undergraduates, and bring a strong student affairs perspective with a focus on residential life. Lee and Mina have offices in Chase Hall, so please drop in to welcome them.

Finally, our “swing deans” have swung. Michael Martinez has joined us from the Admission office to serve as the 2011-12 assistant dean for student transition. Carmita McCoy, who served in this role in the Dean of Students Office during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years, returns to Admission this year to help recruit and enroll the Class of 2016.
