Bates jazz, steel pan ensembles in back-to-back concerts

Both in 7 p.m. concerts, the Bates Jazz Band performs on Wednesday, Dec. 4, and the Bates Steel Pan Orchestra on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Both events take place at the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Admission is free but tickets are required, available at bit.ly/oacbates. For more information, please call 207-786-6135.

Directed by Tom Snow, the jazz concert features both the full 18-member Jazz Band and the 10-piece improvisational Jazz Combo, both comprising Bates students.

Their eclectic repertoire features jazz, Latin jazz, funk and blues. Students will play music by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Tower of Power, George Gershwin, Michael Jackson, Duke Ellington and others.

The Steel Pan Orchestra, using authentic instruments from the West Indies, plays jazz and other styles blended into the Caribbean sound. Directed by Erica Butler, the orchestra is known for its driving energy and upbeat mood.
