Literal and figurative fog shrouded Garcelon Field on Wednesday as the Bates women’s lacrosse team faced Wellesley in the Bobcats’ season opener.

The real fog occurred as warm, moist air settled over the area’s snowpack, and it engulfed players and coaches throughout the game. “This is by the far the foggiest game I’ve ever played,” said goalkeeper Eliza Statile ’19 of Ipswich, Mass.

The figurative fog was because 10 Bobcats graduated from last year’s NCAA tournament team, so prospects for 2017 have been hard to figure.

Until now. After nine different players scored goals in Bates’ 19-7 victory over the Blue, things are clearer. “We’re excited. This is the real deal,” said Statile.

NESCAC play begins Sunday at Wesleyan.
