Four named Bates College trustees

Geraldine FitzGerald of New York City and Jeffrey D. Sturgis of Minot, Maine, have been elected to the Board of Overseers by the alumni body; Karen Harris of South Portland, Maine, and Carole Segal of Winnetka, Ill., have been appointed to serve on the bicameral board of trustees at Bates College, announced President Donald W. Harward.

Bates receives $1.3 million grant for science education

Bates College has received a $1.3 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the nation's largest private supporter of science education from elementary school through postdoctoral studies.

Northfield student wins Fulbright Scholarship

Kari M. Jorgensen, formerly of Northfield, Minn., received a Fulbright scholarship to conduct research in Turkey on the transition of women's roles in Islamic mysticism and Turkish politics between the late Ottoman and early Republican periods. Jorgensen also will be studying Ottoman and modern Turkish.

Education professor wins teaching award

Brunswick resident Anne Wescott Dodd, chair of the Department of Education at Bates College, has received the 2000 Kroepsch Award for Excellence in Teaching. The two-part award includes a $1,000 prize and a $1,500 discretionary fund to support Dodd's teaching.

Lakeside concert series to be held at Bates

The Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series will present five Thursday evening musical performances at the open-air Florence Keigwin Amphitheater overlooking Lake Andrews behind the Olin Arts Center. All concerts begin at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Norman E. Ross, Treasurer Emeritus, Dies at 101

Norman Ernest Ross, 101, Bates College treasurer emeritus who served the school for 44 years, died June 30 at Russell Park Rehabilitation and Living Center after a long illness.

Wenzel receives National Science Foundation grant

Thomas J. Wenzel of Auburn, Maine will conduct research aimed at improving the use of NMR spectroscopy in distinguishing pairs of chiral compounds, used to distinguish the left- and right-hand sides of amino acids and other chemical compounds.

Volpi wins inaugural Stanton Environmental Award

Robert Volpi, director of Bates College Dining Services, has received the inaugural Stanton Environmental Award from the Bates College Environmental Confederation, a group of staff, faculty and students who coordinate the college's efforts to raise environmental awareness and implement programs that encourage environmental sustainability.

Bates announces Community Humanities Seminars for Lewiston, South Paris high school students

The Bates College Office of Admissions, with a grant from the Maine Humanities Council, will offer two Community Humanities Seminars for 30-40 intellectually curious and motivated high school students. The two groups, one based in Lewiston at Bates College and the other based in Paris, Maine, will meet one evening per week for five weeks.

Virtuoso organist to perform Bates concert
