Norman E. Ross, Treasurer Emeritus, Dies at 101

Norman Ernest Ross, 101, Bates College treasurer emeritus who served the school for 44 years, died June 30 at Russell Park Rehabilitation and Living Center after a long illness.
Wenzel receives National Science Foundation grant

Thomas J. Wenzel of Auburn, Maine will conduct research aimed at improving the use of NMR spectroscopy in distinguishing pairs of chiral compounds, used to distinguish the left- and right-hand sides of amino acids and other chemical compounds.
Volpi wins inaugural Stanton Environmental Award

Robert Volpi, director of Bates College Dining Services, has received the inaugural Stanton Environmental Award from the Bates College Environmental Confederation, a group of staff, faculty and students who coordinate the college's efforts to raise environmental awareness and implement programs that encourage environmental sustainability.
Bates announces Community Humanities Seminars for Lewiston, South Paris high school students

The Bates College Office of Admissions, with a grant from the Maine Humanities Council, will offer two Community Humanities Seminars for 30-40 intellectually curious and motivated high school students. The two groups, one based in Lewiston at Bates College and the other based in Paris, Maine, will meet one evening per week for five weeks.
Virtuoso organist to perform Bates concert

Scarsdale student named Phillips Student Fellow at Bates

Margot Fine, a Bates College sophomore from Scarsdale, N.Y., has been named a 2000 Phillips Student Fellow and will receive a grant of up to $10,000 to live with a Nepali family in a rural village in the Himalayan mountains while working with the village on community development for six weeks this summer.

Mindy Newman, a Bates College senior from Atlanta, Ga., has been named a 2000 Phillips Student Fellow and will receive a grant of up to $10,000 to conduct pre-thesis research on "Egeria's Travels," the epistolary journal of the late fourth-century Christian female pilgrim Egeria.
Barlows make major gift to support Study Abroad

David Barlow, Bates College class of 1979, and his wife, Ann Barlow of Wellesley, Mass., have made a $1.5-million gift to support the experience of Bates students, faculty and alumni studying abroad, President Donald W. Harward announced.
