Woodbridge student named Phillips Student Fellow at Bates

John Lichtman, a Bates College junior from Woodbridge, Conn., has been named a 2000 Phillips Student Fellow and will receive a grant of up to $10,000 to examine the intersection of environmental preservation and economic development in Kenya this summer.

Christian McTighe, a Bates College junior from Delmar, N.Y., has been named a 2000 Phillips Student Fellow and will receive a grant of up to $10,000 to compare two contemplative paths, Roman Catholic monasticism and Zen Buddhist monasticism, at several sites in Japan this summer.

"Eloquent Objects: the Sense and Sensibilities of Still-Life Painting" to open at Bates College Museum of Art

"Eloquent Objects: the Sense and Sensibilities of Still-Life Painting" will open the summer season at the Bates College Museum of Art at 7 p.m. Friday, June 9. The exhibition features 50 contemporary still-life paintings by 13 artists living or working in Maine. The public is invited to view the exhibition through Aug. 25, 2000, free of charge.

Jack Keigwin '59 gave to restore Lake Andrews and create amphitheater

To repay the gift that Bates made to him four decades ago, he and Beverly gave to restore Lake Andrews and create the Florence Keigwin Amphitheater, named for his aunt, and the Marjorie Burgoyne Walk, named for Beverly's mother.

Bates commencement slated for May 29; Tutu to speak

Desmond Tutu, archbishop emeritus of the Diocese of Cape Town and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his advocacy of racial justice in South Africa, will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree and speak at the 134th commencement at Bates College. Donald W. Harward, president of Bates College, will confer bachelor's degrees on approximately 475 seniors at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, in an outdoor ceremony in front of Coram Library. In case of rain, the graduation exercises will be held in the nearby Margaret Hopkins Merrill Gymnasium.

Bates student wins fellowship to study in The Netherlands

Jason Surdukowski, a Bates College sophomore from Concord, N.H., has been named a 2000 Humanity In Action (HIA) Fellow for five weeks of intensive study in the United States and The Netherlands on historic and contemporary resistance to human rights violations.

Theater at Bates to stage outdoor performances of "Smoke on the Mountain"

Theater at Bates will stage four performances of the bluegrass gospel musical "Smoke on the Mountain" at 7 p.m. May 19, at 2 and 7 p.m. May 20 and at 2 p.m. May 21 at the Florence Keigwin Amphitheater, overlooking Lake Andrews on the Bates College campus.
