Award-winning author John Edgar Wideman to speak at Bates on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Novelist John Edgar Wideman, two-time winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award, and Sharon Robinson, daughter of baseball great Jackie Robinson, will speak at Bates College on Martin Luther King Jr. Day as part of a two-day series of activities and workshops focused on Two Societies: A Focus on Class through the Lenses of Race and Gender. The public is invited to attend all events free of charge.

Warwick couple’s $1-million gift funds Bates College campus restoration project

A $1-million gift from Henry "Jack" Keigwin '59, and his wife, Beverly, of Warwick, R.I., has funded a major environmental restoration project and new granite amphitheater on the Bates College campus.

María del Carmen Boza, author of Scattering the Ashes, an account of the Cuban exile experience, will read selections from her acclaimed memoir at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, in the Special Collections room of Ladd Library. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Bates to hold symposium on education, religion and contemporary issues

In the wake of a series of hateful acts directed toward a number of synagogues and churches in Maine, issues of preparing a new generation for an age of religious pluralism will be explored in a three-day symposium at Bates College Friday, Jan. 22, Jan. 23 and Sunday, Jan. 24, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives.

"In Black and White: Landscape Prints by Claire Van Vliet" Opens

Curator Ruth Fine from the National Gallery of Art will present a lecture for an exhibition of work by nationally renowned printmaker Claire Van Vliet at the Bates College Museum of Art Friday, Jan. 22. Fine's lecture, "Ordered Expressionism: Claire Van Vliet's Landscape," will be given at 7 p.m. in Room 104 of the college's Olin Arts Center, 75 Russell St. A reception follows the lecture, which is open to the public without charge. The exhibition, "In Black and White: Landscape Prints by Claire Van Vliet," features more than 30 lithographs, etchings and engravings, depicting landscapes from around the world.

Best-selling author to discuss popular culture at Bates

Noted cultural critic David Horowitz will discuss the intersection of popular culture and public policy at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, in the Benjamin Mays Center, 95 Russell St. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Three concerts have been canceled

Please note that the recently distributed Bates College Calendar for the 1999 winter and spring terms includes three scheduled concerts that have been canceled. Performances by pianist Richard Goode and violinist Marcia Goode scheduled for Jan. 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall have been canceled. In addition, a Jan. 22 performance at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center by soprano Christina Astrachan, accompanied by pianist Mark Howard, also has been canceled.

"Raised on Radio" to air on WRBC

WRBC-91.5 FM, the 120-watt, commercial-free, student-run radio station at Bates College, will celebrate its 40th year of broadcasting with Raised on Radio, an on-air trip down memory lane with past and present WRBC announcers Saturday, Dec. 12, from noon to 4:30 p.m.

Bates' largest gift ever comes from former college president

Bates has received its largest gift ever from a bequest by the late Charles F. and Evelyn M. Phillips. Phillips was the fourth president of Bates having served from 1944-66.
