Bates librarian elected Music Library Association president

Paula Matthews, associate librarian and music librarian of the George and Helen Ladd Library at Bates College, has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Music Library Association (MLA). The organization's election results were announced at its recent 67th annual meeting in Boston.

Bates hosts reception to celebrate Carson letters gift

To celebrate the significant gift of a series of letters written by the late environmentalist Rachel Carson, Bates College will host a reception with speakers Saturday, Oct. 17, from 4-6 p.m. in the George and Helen Ladd Library. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Bates geologists to lead Great Falls field trips

Geologists are offering an unusual opportunity to explore the 420-million-year geological history so dramatically displayed in the rock outcroppings of the Great Falls here in Lewiston. Led by the Bates College geology department during Earth Science Week (Oct. 11-17), a series of field trips also will examine the significant role played by the falls in the settlement and development of the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Latvian choir to perform

Maine gubernatorial candidates to debate at Bates

Maine's five candidates for governor will discuss their views in a televised debate at Bates College Friday, Oct. 16, at 9 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. Admission is by ticket only. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis starting Monday, Oct. 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bates College Office of Special Projects, 163 Wood Street, Lewiston. No phone reservations will be accepted.

Naturalist to deliver annual Otis Lecture

Terry Tempest Williams, Western naturalist, cancer survivor and author who focuses on the intimate relationship between human frailty and nature, will speak on "Restoration: Faith, Art and Wildness" at Bates College Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The public is invited to attend the annual Philip J. Otis Lecture and admission is free.

Robinson Players to stage Neil Simon's "Chapter Two"

The Robinson Players, a Bates College theater group, will stage four performances of Pulitzer Prize-winner Neil Simon's comic drama "Chapter Two" Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 16, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. Directed by Jonathan Adler, a Bates junior from Newton, Mass., all performances of "Chapter Two" will be in Gannett Theater. The public is invited to attend, and general admission is $5.

Lenny Kravitz to headline Bates concert

Lenny Kravitz, whose down-and-dirty rock anthems, including "Are You Gonna Go My Way," have won critical and popular acclaim, will perform at Bates College Saturday, Oct. 17, at 8 p.m. in the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building. Sean Lennon, son of the late Beatle and music legend John Lennon, will open for Kravitz with songs from his album, "Into the Sun." Tickets are $20 and are available at Bull Moose Music stores in Lewiston (207-784-6463) and Portland (207-780-6424).
