And whether we like it or not, we have to take action.”.A representative of the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led movement for climate-change action, Verma is a double major in theater and in rhetoric, film, and screen studies. A teachable moment during the Global Climate Strike prompts a veteran Bates professor to examine her history of activism.

BIES 271 - Dendrology and the Natural History of Trees/LabIn this field-based course, students engage in the scientific study of the natural history and identification of trees and important shrubs native to New England, and some commonly planted non-native trees. Topics include the anatomy, function, taxonomy, biology, and uses of trees. Lecture topics support weekly outdoor laboratories, which include trips to such field sites as the Saco Heath, Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary, and Wolfe's Neck State Park. Study of the woody flora of New England serves as a foundation for further work in biology, environmental studies, conservation, or related fields. ___________________________Closeups of two students in particular: Olivia LaMarche '20 of Lynnfield, Mass., in purple with long blonde hair and environmental studies major Grace Warder ’20 of New York City with green vest and long brown hair.Hugget took students for an inspection of trees in the neighborhood surrounding Bates on the Mountain Avenue side of Campus Avenue, quizzing them along the way about the tree species they encountered. They entered their answers on a slip of paper, which he then collected from them at the end of their walk. Examples of the trees were : catalpa, butternut, red pine, sugar maple and ginkgo.

At today's Opening Convocation ceremony, keynote speaker and honorand Dolores Huerta @doloreshuerta, an icon of the labor rights movement and civil rights leader, helped usher in the academic year at Bates by encouraging the Class of 2023 and the broader Bates community to become active in the fight against racism, anti-semitism, and sexism.Clark A. The eight twins of the Class of 2019 have forged their own paths, but with a sibling close at hand.

Clio Barr is a STA/RT (SHORT TERM ACTION/RESEARCH TEAM) partner with the Center for Wisdom's Women Herban Works. Her project title is Creating Marketing Materials and a Business Plan for Sophia's House.On the first spring day of the 2019 Lewiston Farmer's Market, Barr sells products on Sunday, May 12, with Judy Maloneygarden and production coordinator and volunteer Mary Hopkins, who also helps with harvesting and planting.
