With an economic recession, lengthy overseas wars and a run of natural disasters hitting the U.S. and other lands, these are trying times. Yet scholars visiting Bates for the Medieval Miseries: Responses to Hard Times conference know that things could be even tougher. Bates hosts the 38th annual New England Medieval Conference on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Room G65, Pettengill Hall, 4 Andrews Road (Alumni Walk).

The vibrant arts community at Bates takes the spotlight as Bates celebrates the 25th anniversary of its Olin Arts Center in 2011-12. The celebration begins with an Oct. 8 family arts festival at Olin and a Museum of Art exhibition exploring the museum’s collection.

A Native American musician and visual artist, a singer from a self-described fusion-trance-zouk band, a video artist and an avant-garde composer join forces for a multimedia experience at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall at Bates College, 75 Russell St. Artist-performer Brad Kahlhamer and vocalist Kelsey Barrett of the Brooklyn-based band Effi Briest offer their program “Yondering.” They share the evening with video artist Ursula Scherrer and composer-bassist Kato Hideki, who create abstract sound-and-light pieces. All the artists hail from New York City.

Known as a mentor by student artists at Bates, senior lecturer Robert Feintuch enjoys a national reputation as the painter of images simultaneously evocative and quietly deadpan, serious and parodic. New York’s Sonnabend Gallery is showing recent paintings and drawings by Feintuch through April 30.
