On an October day that could have passed for August, Bates marked the 25th anniversary of its Olin Arts Center with a family arts festival. And while the attractions included a marching band, popcorn, balloon animals and juggling, the festivity was much more than just another day at the circus. The headliners, avant-garde marching band Asphalt Orchestra and the New Vaudeville act Two, managed both to honor the long traditions they represent and to show them in a new light.

Rachel Boggia, acting director of the Bates dance program, presents a dance incorporating interactive video at 7 p.m. Monday, May 16, in the Plavin Dance Studio on the second floor of Merrill Gymnasium, 141 Russell St. Titled “In the Very Eye of the Night,” the piece is an 11-minute solo created by Marlon Barrios Solano and performed by Boggia. The event concludes the series “Race in a Post-Human World,” an examination of technology’s impacts on concepts of social categories.

The standing ovation alone would have been plenty. But, lest there be any doubt about the reason for the gathering, a few dozen Bates dancers put it into words, too: “We love you, Marcy.” The shout-out to Marcy Plavin kicked off an April 30 evening of dance honoring the retired Bates dance director and her husband, the late Leonard Plavin, a photographer who compiled an invaluable visual archive depicting 40 years of dance at the college.
