Jolene Thurston of Post Mills, Vt., a senior chemistry major, has discovered a new method for separating amino-acid components, an integral step in finding chemical compounds with undiscovered pharmaceutical value.

Wenzel named Maine Professor of the Year

Thomas J. Wenzel, Charles A. Dana Professor of Chemistry at Bates College, has been named the 1997 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Maine Professor of the Year, announced the Council For Advancement and Support of Education.

Nobel Laureate in chemistry to speak

Harvard University scientist Dudley R. Herschbach, winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1986, will present two lectures at Bates College on Wednesday, Oct. 2, as this year’s visitor in the du Pont Eminent Scientists Seminar Series.

Scientist to Speak at Bates

Distinguished scientist Jack E. Dixon will discuss “Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases: Their Roles in Signal Transduction” at Bates College on March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in room 204 of the Carnegie Science Center. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Dixon’s talk, the second in a series to celebrate the establishment of a new Bates major in biological chemistry, will include a discussion of the biochemistry of cell cycling and the role of biological chemistry research in society.
