Bates College sophomores Matthew Ensner of Asheville, N.C., and Takeshi Miyamoto of Tokyo, Japan, have been named Philip J. Otis Fellows and will receive $5,000 grants for research and travel to promote greater understanding of environmental issues and the connection between the environment and spirituality.

Middletown Student Receives Fulbright Grant

Robert R. Gatehouse of Middletown, Conn., has been awarded a Fulbright grant by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to teach English and study in Chemnitz, Germany. The grant will pay Gatehouse’s travel and living expenses during the 1997-98 academic year.

Eight Mitchell Scholars to attend Bates

Eight Maine students who received $2,500 scholarships from a fund created by former U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell will attend Bates College in September 1997. More than 170 Maine students applied for 30 Mitchell Scholarships awarded on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, community spirit and public service.
