2009 Otis Fellows expand knowledge of history, culture, environment

More than 100 years later, the Yukon River still bears the evidence of the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush: abandoned cabins, mining equipment, even shoes still scattered along the way. Last summer, two Bates seniors set out to experience this historic episode first-hand. They retraced the fortune hunters’ trail along the Yukon, from Lake Bennett in Canada across Alaska to the Bering Sea — a distance of nearly 2,000 miles, covered by foot and canoe.

Byers, Kaluba recount Phillips Fellowship experiences in Indonesia, Central America

Barbara Byers ’10, a resident of Elkins, W.V., offered a performance native to West Java, Indonesia as part of an Oct. 7 presentation on student experiences made possible by the Phillips Student Fellowship program at Bates. Also presenting was Chomba Kaluba ’10, originally from Mpika, Zambia, and now a resident of Long Island, Maine.

Bates novice debaters triumph at Stanford tournament

First-year Bates students Colin Etnire of San Francisco and his partner Ian Mahmud of Milton, Mass., defeated a team from Yale University to win the novice division of the 2009 Stanford University Parliamentary Debate Tournament, held March 6 and 7 in Palo Alto, Calif.

Capping a strong year, Bates debaters shine at nationals

The Brooks Quimby Debate Council recently sent six Bates College debaters to the American Parliamentary Debate Association’s national tournament at MIT, where teammates Brendan Jarboe ’08 of Acton, Mass., and Matt Marienthal ’10 of Chicago advanced to the tournament’s octofinals. As a result of their outstanding 5-1 MIT performance, the duo is currently ranked 11th best in the country.

Stephen Lattanzi, a Bates College senior from Winchester, Mass., is one of two winners of a regional competition in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, held Jan. 29- Feb. 3 at Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, Mass.

Bates students, alumni net at least six top fellowships

In the 2005-06 academic season, at least six Bates students and alumni have received prestigious graduate fellowships. Most worked with the Bates Graduate Fellowship and Watson Committees to prepare their applications.
