Student achievement is celebrated in fifth Mount David Summit

Through poster presentations, panel discussions and readings, a photography exhibit, film projects and much more, some 200 Bates College students will publicly share their academic and creative efforts at the fifth annual Mount David Summit, starting at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 24, in Pettengill Hall, Andrews Road.

Short Term's a time for rigor, research…and Red Sox

Short Term at Bates is known among students for pressure-cooker courses like “Cellular and Molecular Biology,” aka “Cell Hell,” and “Introduction to Abstraction,” better known as “Math Camp.” But the academic offerings during these five weeks of spring have a reputation not only for rigor but for topicality, adventurousness and even, dare we say, for fun. And Short Term units new in 2005 are no exceptions.

Senior's art transforms Perry Atrium

A senior art major’s thesis project has transformed Pettengill Hall’s Perry Atrium, covering most of its three-story glass wall with translucent paintings that flood this popular space with the glowing colors of stained glass.

Students receive Otis, Phillips fellowships

One will go to Ireland to explore connections between the wilderness and the monastic way of life. Another will live with families in the Bolivian Andes to better understand ways urbanization and globalization affect rural society. A third will spend two months in Ethiopia researching trade between Africa and Europe.
