Lewiston High School Science Fair prizewinners announced

Plaques, medals and more than $1,200 will be awarded for the projects deemed the best at the third annual Lewiston High School Science Fair held Thursday, May 9th. Award-winning students will be presented at the high school’s “Night of Excellence” on June 3.

Student awarded $32,000 Beinecke Scholarship

Major alumnus gift supports professorship

Robert J. Barro, the Robert C. Waggoner Professor of Economics at Harvard University, will deliver the Thomas Sowell Professorship of Economics inaugural lecture, titled Economics and Religion, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in the Keck Classroom of Pettengill Hall. A reception will follow in Pettengill’s Perry Atrium, and the public is invited to attend the entire event free of charge.

Lewiston High Science Fair features some 450 student projects

The third annual Lewiston High School Science Fair takes place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9 in the high school gymnasium, 156 East Ave. Presented in partnership with the Bates College Center for Service-Learning, the fair features nearly 450 projects created during the school year by students in grades 9 through 12.

'Fantastic' Short Term arrives

Students and faculty loved Short Term. What began as an extension of the Bates ethos of hard work became an unexpected, and at that time rare, opportunity for faculty to try out new courses and teaching strategies. During three five-day kayaking and camping excursions to Maine’s isolated coastal islands, Eusden and his students will map the varying bedrock geology around Casco Bay, Penobscot Bay, and Mount Desert Island.
