Four honorary degree recipients will speak at Bates College’s 141st commencement, on May 27. The honorands are children’s book author Eric Carle, singer-songwriter Corey Harris ’91, inventor-entrepreneur Dean Kamen and actor and author Anna Deavere Smith.

An Italian actor expert in the influential stage genre called “commedia dell’arte” presents a workshop on the topic at Bates College at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the Plavin Dance Studio, Merrill Gymnasium, 141 Russell Street.

The Roots, a hip hop sextet recently nominated for two Grammy Awards, perform Monday, March 26, in the Bates College’s Gray Athletic Building, Central Avenue.

Actor, comedian and TV host Bob Saget performs at Bates College at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, in the Gray Athletic Building, Central Avenue. Comedian Alexandra McHale, known for her VH1 commentaries about television, opens for Saget. The doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $18, with tickets available at Bull Moose locations and online at www.batestickets.com. The show is sponsored by the Chase Hall Committee. Please note that this performance is intended for mature audiences only.

A jazz trombonist playing with a Mongolian band, famed jazz pianist Marcus Roberts and two distinctive classical concerts are featured in the 2006-07 Bates College Concert Series. The series starts with trombonist Roswell Rudd and the Mongolian Buryat Band on Nov. 2. Concerts begin at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St., and are open to the public. Award-winning writer Alake Pilgrim, a member of the Bates College Class of 2003, returns to campus for a two-week residency in May that includes reading her short stories, screening a film about immigration and giving a talk about religious identity. Cristin McKnight, of Los Angeles, is the second Bates College graduate to receive a 2004-05 grant for postgraduate research from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Author, filmmaker, writer and professor Melvin B. Donalson, a member of the Bates Class of 1973, will give a lecture titled “Black Masculinity in American Cinema” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, Keck Classroom (G52), Pettengill Hall. The public is invited to attend the talk free of charge.

Whatever their occupations, Bates alumni know their experiences since graduation constitute a knowledge resource that can benefit fellow alumni as well as today’s students. And they’re not stingy with that resource.
