Ian Bleakney '91 awarded 2001 Barlow grant to study education in India

Ian Bleakney ’91, a science teacher and department chair at Merritt College High School, a small public high school, in Oakland, Calif., was recently awarded the 2001 Barlow Alumni Travel Grant from Bates College.

Bates alumni receive awards at Reunion Weekend

Bates College presented awards to distinguished alumni at the college’s Reunion Weekend 2001 held this year from June 15 to 17. John A. Kenney, M.D., class of 1942, was presented with the Benjamin Elijah Mays Award, while Sally Ehrenfried, class of 1989, received the Distinguished Young Alumni Service Award.

Graduate produces Maine Public Broadcasting documentary

2001 cum laude graduate Nicole Goloskov of Chadds Ford, Pa., has produced “Camera Obscura,” a video portrait of Rockland, Maine, photographer Chris Pinchbeck, to be broadcast Saturday, June 30, and Sunday, July 1, as part of the Maine Public Broadcasting television series “True North.”

Author Elizabeth Strout ’77 will see her best-selling prose transformed for the small screen March 4 with the ABC telecast of Oprah Winfrey Presents: Amy & Isabelle, an adaptation of Strout’s acclaimed debut novel.

"Scientific and Medical Entrepreneurship" discussed in series

Dr. Michael Thorne Kelly, vice president for research, chairman of the board and founder of Advanced Management Catalyst Inc. in Wiscasset, and Dr. William S. Holt, Bates College class of 1963 and CEO of Eye Care & Surgery Center of Maine, will discuss “Scientific and Medical Entrepreneurship” at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives at Bates College. The presentation is part of The Bates Seminar Series in Entrepreneurship, and public is invited to attend free of charge.

"Wasted" to be staged

An English teacher at Edward Little High School in Auburn, Flynn did not determine the form or content of the play, subtitled “Thoughts Tasted, Moments Wasted: Perspectives on Bates College Culture 1995-96,” until he chose cast members. “We will collaboratively write a full-length play about Bates College culture in 14 days and mount the production in the following three weeks,” Flynn informed his troupe. “Wasted” will be performed with one 10-minute intermission.
