Robert Goodlatte, 6th Congressional District, R-Va., will speak on Issues Facing the U.S. Congress in 1998: A Judiciary Committee Perspective March 15 at 8 p.m. in Chase Lounge. Following Goodlatte’s discussion of issues facing Congress, including religious freedom, computer security, potential impeachment inquiries and civil rights, there will be a question-and-answer period. The public is invited to attend and admission is free. |

Land-mine eradication advocates to lecture at BatesJulie Groom-Thompson, executive director of the Maine Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, and David Kuhns, a physician’s assistant who has treated land-mine victims in Afghanistan as a member of Doctors Without Borders, will give a presentation on land-mine eradication at 7 p.m., Sept. 22, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The public is invited and admission is free. |

Bates to bestow degree on Maya AngelouPoet Maya Angelou will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Bates College on April 3 at 11 a.m. as part of the college’s annual Founders Day Convocation. Angelou, acclaimed poet, playwright, educator, historian, actress, civil rights activist, producer and director, will address the audience in Merrill Gymnasium. |

"Wasted" to be stagedAn English teacher at Edward Little High School in Auburn, Flynn did not determine the form or content of the play, subtitled “Thoughts Tasted, Moments Wasted: Perspectives on Bates College Culture 1995-96,” until he chose cast members. “We will collaboratively write a full-length play about Bates College culture in 14 days and mount the production in the following three weeks,” Flynn informed his troupe. “Wasted” will be performed with one 10-minute intermission.
