U.S. Representative to discuss national judiciary committee

Alumnus U.S. Rep. Robert Goodlatte, 6th Congressional District, R-Va., will speak on Issues Facing the U.S. Congress in 1998: A Judiciary Committee Perspective March 15 at 8 p.m. in Chase Lounge. Following Goodlatte’s discussion of issues facing Congress, including religious freedom, computer security, potential impeachment inquiries and civil rights, there will be a question-and-answer period. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

Land-mine eradication advocates to lecture at Bates

Julie Groom-Thompson, executive director of the Maine Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, and David Kuhns, a physician’s assistant who has treated land-mine victims in Afghanistan as a member of Doctors Without Borders, will give a presentation on land-mine eradication at 7 p.m., Sept. 22, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The public is invited and admission is free.

Bates to bestow degree on Maya Angelou

Poet Maya Angelou will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Bates College on April 3 at 11 a.m. as part of the college’s annual Founders Day Convocation. Angelou, acclaimed poet, playwright, educator, historian, actress, civil rights activist, producer and director, will address the audience in Merrill Gymnasium.

Bates to bestow degree on Papaioanou

Bates College trustee and alumna Dr. Helen A. Papaioanou, national chair of the recently completed $59-million Bates Campaign, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree on April 3 as part of the college’s annual Founders Day Convocation.

"Wasted" to be staged

An English teacher at Edward Little High School in Auburn, Flynn did not determine the form or content of the play, subtitled “Thoughts Tasted, Moments Wasted: Perspectives on Bates College Culture 1995-96,” until he chose cast members. “We will collaboratively write a full-length play about Bates College culture in 14 days and mount the production in the following three weeks,” Flynn informed his troupe. “Wasted” will be performed with one 10-minute intermission.
