Asked to describe her job as an archivist, Katherine Stefko’s stock reply is, “I’m paid to read other people’s mail.” The joke is revealing. Director of archives and special collections at Bates, Stefko oversees the delicate work of gathering documentary materials that reveal the details — sometimes very personal — of history.

Hundreds of alumni, faculty, students and friends met over a harvest dinner in Merrill Gymnasium Oct. 30 to celebrate the alumni launch of The Campaign for Bates: Endowing Our Values, a comprehensive fund-raising effort to raise at least $120 million by June 30, 2006.

Bates College presented awards to distinguished alumni Saturday at the college’s Reunion Weekend 2002, held this year from June 6 to 9. The Rev. Arthur E. Higgins ’43, received Bates’ highest honor, the Benjamin Elijah Mays Award. Paula M. Colahan ’87, received the Distinguished Young Alumni Service Award. Norman E. Brackett ’52, received the Alumni Community Service Award, and David O. Boone ’62 and Carol Huntington Boone ’63, received the Helen A. Papaioanou ’49 Distinguished Alumni Service Award.

Bates College presented awards to distinguished alumni at the college’s Reunion Weekend 2001 held this year from June 15 to 17. John A. Kenney, M.D., class of 1942, was presented with the Benjamin Elijah Mays Award, while Sally Ehrenfried, class of 1989, received the Distinguished Young Alumni Service Award.
