The 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance at Bates College focused on “Modernizing King: Old Roots, New Struggle.” Each year, Bates observes King’s birthday by suspending regular classes and focusing community attention on special programming throughout the day.

I know you are all aware of the shocking tragedy that occurred at Virginia Tech early in the week. While no words are adequate in a situation so sad and horrifying, I know you join me in expressing our sympathies for the friends and families of those whose lives were lost, and for all members of the Virginia Tech community as they grieve. Our thoughts also go out to members of our own community who have friends or family at Virginia Tech. Our primary concern must be with the victims, but at the same time such painful incidents may understandably cause us to reflect on our own safety.

Local high school students and staff will join Steve Wessler, director of the Maine Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, for a discussion of the “Unity Project,” a multiyear harassment prevention program built around the use of peer influence, at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 14, in Chase Hall Lounge, Chase Hall, 56 Campus Ave., Bates College. The public is invited to attend the event, co-sponsored by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships and the education department at Bates, free of charge. In honor of Rosa Parks’ legacy of leadership and life contributions to the struggle for civil and human rights, the Martin Luther King Day Committee and the Multicultural Center of Bates College held a program in memoriam and appreciation from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the Benjamin Mays Center.

Bates College swimmer Phil Barr (Lincoln, R.I.), a survivor of the 2003 Station nightclub fire in West Warwick, R.I., who made an inspirational return to varsity swimming his senior year despite damaged lungs, was named the male 2005 NCAA Sportsmanship Award winner.

On May 1, a hot and sunny Saturday, a bunch of Batesies and other volunteers gathered for National Rebuilding Day, an annual community undertaking to rehabilitate housing for the disadvantaged.

In an effort to raise awareness about the escalating problem of homelessness faced in the Lewiston-Auburn community, the Bates College Hunger and Homelessness Committee and the Coalition of Many and One will co-sponsor three events May 3-8, beginning with a panel discussion titled “Breaking Stereotypes: Homelessness in Perspective,” at 7 p.m. Monday, May 3, Skelton Lounge, Chase Hall, 56 Campus Avenue. The public is invited to attend at no charge.
