For the past three years, the Bates College men's rowing team has stood by as the women's team has qualified for, and excelled in, the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. Since the NCAA doesn't sponsor championships in men's rowing, it would be understandable if there might have been mixed emotions about seeing their teammates get to extend their season in something resembling the limelight.

Bates College had its best showing ever in the NCAA Division III Women's Rowing Championships, claiming second place in both the team standings and in the Grand Final in convincing fashion on Saturday.

Bates junior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) became a three-time All-American by finishing fifth in the women's hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week at Marietta College.

They may as well have played on their own home courts, or at Lisbon High School for that matter, 3,000 miles away. But one of the greatest moments in the history of Bates athletics was a win over virtual neighbor and arch rival Bowdoin, decided in Southern California late Sunday night.

Few athletes in Bates College history have ever reached the degree of achievement Ben Stein did May 22-24, 2009, when he won eight matches and lost only one, the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championship, and headed home as a national champion.

On the final day of the 2009 Bates baseball season, sophomore outfielder Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) wrapped up an outstanding first season as a regular starter. In the season-ending doubleheader at St. Joseph's of Maine, Burke went a combined 4-for-7 with three runs and three RBIs.

Bates senior Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) broke the New England Division III Women's Track and Field Championship meet record in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday at Springfield College, winning the event in 1:01.78 and slicing 0.18 seconds off of the previous set by Springfield's Beth Bowler in 1998.
