Over a period of four weeks, April 23-May 16, Bates College students, theater faculty and returning alumni artists will stage the first Bates Performance-Theater Festival 1998 in a series of workshops and collaborations of cutting-edge performance theater on the theme of diversity and difference. Some of the performances include adult themes. The public is invited to attend all events free of charge.

Bates’ free Noonday Concerts, open to the public, are held Tuesdays from 12:30 to 1 p.m. There will be no concert on April 13 when Bates is in recess.

An exhibition of works by nine graduating studio art majors will open with a reception in the upper gallery of the Museum of Art Friday, April 3, at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Accomplished pianist and organist Trudy Pitts will discuss her life as a female African-American jazz artist when she delivers the annual Edith C. and Raymond L. Kendall Lecture April 1 at 3 p.m. in Room 105 of the Olin Arts Center.

Senior Amy Chandler, a music major from New Sharon, will perform a thesis concert of violin and fiddle music April 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The public is invited and admission is free.

The Bates Modern Dance Company, under the artistic guest direction of Lionel Popkin, presents its annual spring concert in a series of three performances March 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. and March 29 at 2 p.m. in Schaeffer Theatre. Tickets are $6 for general admission and $3 for seniors.

The College Choir, under the direction of John Corrie, will perform Handel’s Messiah Parts II and III March 28 at 8 p.m. and March 29 at 2 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The 74 student-members of the College Choir will be accompanied by members of the College Orchestra. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Please call 207-786-6135 for reserved seating.

Bates College senior Nils van Otterloo, a music major from Marblehead, Mass., will perform “The Nexus: a fusion of Indian classical music and Western jazz” at Bates College March 21 at 4 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
