"Thinking, Seeing and Painting" to be discussed at Bates

“Thinking, Seeing and Painting,” a panel discussion on landscape oil sketching with Maine artists Ann Lofquist, Joel Babb and James Linehan, will be held at Bates College at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in Room 104 of the Olin Arts Center. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Sultzes to exhibit collages, stoneware at Museum of Art

Two Dennysville artists will exhibit their work at the Bates College Museum of Art in an upper-gallery exhibit, “Phil Sultz: Painted Collage; Jan Sultz: Stoneware Forms,” June 5-Aug. 15. An opening reception will be held June 5 at 7 p.m. in the museum located in the Olin Arts Center. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Maine native's work featured in Black Maria Film Festival

Bowdoin native Kerry Laitala is one of several filmmakers whose works will be featured at the Museum of Art’s screenings of the 17th annual Black Maria Film, Video and Animation Festival Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Appriximately 18 of the winning entries will be shown in the two screenings. Admission is $5 for each screening, and tickets can be purchased at the door.

Black Maria film festival to screen winning entries

Bates will screen winning entries from the 17th annual Black Maria Film and Video Festival May 2 and May 3 in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The Saturday program begins at 8 p.m., and a different program begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 for each screening, and tickets can be purchased at the door. The festival is sponsored by the Bates College Museum of Art with support from the Bates Filmboard.

'Narrative Quilts' opens at Bates Museum of Art

Artist Michael Cummings will discuss his “Narrative Quilts” exhibit at the Bates College Museum of Art at 7 p.m. on Jan. 9 in Room 104 of the Olin Arts Center, 75 Russell St. A reception for the artist, cosponsored by the African-American Studies Program at Bates, will immediately follow in the Museum of Art. The public is invited and admission is free.

Through the demonstration of outstanding performance in all areas of museum operations, the Bates College Museum of Art has again been awarded the highly competitive General Operating Support award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in Washington D.C.

Bates Museum of Art hosts theremin concert

Barry Morse will perform a concert of original electronic music for theremin at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Bates College Museum of Art, 75 Russell St. Morse’s compositions were inspired by the museum’s current exhibit, “Alex Grey: Numinous Flesh”. The public is invited and admission is free.

'Numinous Flesh' exhibit opens at Bates College

The Bates College Museum of Art celebrates its season- opening exhibition, “Numinous Flesh, paintings by Alex Grey,” with a lecture by and a reception for the artist at 7 p.m. Sept. 5. The lecture will be in Room 104 of the Olin Arts Center, and the reception will be in the museum. The public is invited and admission is free.
