Bates College Museum of Art Director Dan Mills joins his counterparts at Bowdoin and Colby colleges in protest against the removal of the Maine Labor Mural Cycle. In a statement issued April 4, Mills, Bowdoin’s Kevin Salatino and Colby’s Sharon Corwin write that the removal of the mural from the state Department of Labor office raises serious issues including “censorship, historical revisionism, and artists’ rights.”

Fifteen studio art majors at Bates College, one of them from Maine, show work from their yearlong thesis projects in the annual Senior Exhibition, which opens with a public reception at 6 p.m. Friday, April 8, in the Bates College Museum of Art, 75 Russell St.

Rachel Perry Welty, one of three artists showing work in a video series at the Bates College Museum of Art, visits Bates to discuss her work at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in Room 104, Olin Arts Center, 75 Russell St. The event is open to the public at no cost. Welty, along with New York artist Christian Marclay and Dutch artists Roy Villevoye and Jan Dietvorst, provided videos for the museum’s exhibition Dialogue, a video series.

Paul Janeczko, a prolific Maine author who specializes in teaching poetry to young people, will lead a workshop in the Museum of Art children’s program that explores writing in relation to the visual arts.

For more than a decade, the Thousand Words Project has been the flagship educational outreach program of the Bates College Museum of Art. Now the museum has launched an educational website for the program, complete with instructional video.

Displaying more than 40 rare books from the Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library, Bound to Art is part of an 18-month celebration of the facility’s 25th anniversary. The college’s book collection ranges from incunabula of printing’s infancy to the finely printed works of today’s flourishing book arts movement.
