State Legislature, North Pole skier help Outing Club celebrate 90th

Founded to get students out of doors during the long Maine winter, the Bates Outing Club celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. Two events this week kicking off the organization’s yearlong birthday celebration. The Maine Legislature honored the student organization with a Legislative Sentiment on Tuesday, Jan. 26, during a ceremony at the State House. Later in the week, Tyler Fish, a Bates alumnus and one of the first Americans to complete an unsupported cross-country ski expedition to the North Pole, visits the college to discuss this grueling journey at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave.

Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Richard W. Sampson, known for inspiring his students through both his passionate and creative teaching of mathematics and his active interest in their lives, died April 1. He was 81.

'Best of the Fest' to be shown at Bates

Best of the Fest, a two-hour highlight film from the 23rd Annual Banff Festival of Mountain Films in Banff, Alberta, Canada, will be shown at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Benjamin Mays Center.

Outing Club celebrates 79th birthday by hosting Peaks Day

Approximately 50 Bates College and area high school students will celebrate the Bates Outing Club’s 79th birthday by holding Peaks Day Saturday, Oct. 17. Led by members of the Bates Outing Club, among the oldest collegiate outing clubs in the country and the first at a private college to include both men and women from the beginning, 20 small groups of hikers from Bates and area high schools will attempt to reach the major summits along the Appalachian Trail in Maine and New Hampshire by 3 p.m. Saturday.

Winter carnival to be held

“Mardi Gras” has been selected as the theme for the 78th annual Bates College Winter Carnival, which includes a ceremonial torch lighting by Gov. Angus King at noon Friday, Jan. 17, on the front steps of the Statehouse in Augusta followed by a relay of the Winter Carnival torch to the Bates campus by student runners.
