Capping a strong year, Bates debaters shine at nationalsThe Brooks Quimby Debate Council recently sent six Bates College debaters to the American Parliamentary Debate Association’s national tournament at MIT, where teammates Brendan Jarboe ’08 of Acton, Mass., and Matt Marienthal ’10 of Chicago advanced to the tournament’s octofinals. As a result of their outstanding 5-1 MIT performance, the duo is currently ranked 11th best in the country. |

Brooks Quimby Debate Council hosts annual high school tournamentFor the fifth consecutive year, the Brooks Quimby Debate Council hosted a Maine high school forensics tournament at Bates College. Approximately 170 students and 70 judges from 23 schools took part in the all-day event on Saturday, Nov. 17. A scheduled tournament in the 2007-08 season of the Maine Forensics Association, the judged competition featured events in Speech, Debate and Student Congress. |

College hosts North American Debating Championships Jan. 26-28The Brooks Quimby Debate Council will host the 2007 North American Debating Championships at Bates College, Jan. 26-28. Known as “NorAms,” the competition is the top debating championship in North America, held on an alternating basis between the United States and Canada since 1991. |

Christopher Laconi '05 wins Harvard Kennedy School fellowshipA year away from academe proved no disadvantage for Christopher Laconi ’05. Shortly before graduation, Laconi was accepted by Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government to pursue a master’s in public policy. But Laconi, a Rhodes Scholarship finalist, deferred matriculation one year so that he could travel in Europe “for work and pleasure” and then consult for nonprofits in Boston. |
