Paul Farnsworth, unlike Cole Porter, wants to be fenced in. Or at least he wants for the renovation of Roger Williams and Hedge halls to stay within its fenced-in work zone. But his goal, paradoxically, is the same as Cole’s: unrestricted mobility. Now, thanks to the end of construction work outside the zone, wandering over yonder is almost as easy as it ever was.

In the final week of the Bates Dance Festival, the annual “Different Voices” concert showcases the internationalism of contemporary dance, with choreographers from the United States, Africa and Mexico bringing compelling styles and perspectives to the stage at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 5 and 6, in Bates College’s Schaeffer Theatre, 305 College St.

AXIS Dance Company, one of the most acclaimed and innovative ensembles of performers with and without disabilities, presents the Maine premieres of award-winning works by choreographers David Dorfman, Alex Ketley and Joe Goode. Performances take place at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 30 and 31, in Bates College’s Alumni Gymnasium, 130 Central Ave.

Five days a week for three weeks in June and July, 100 student dancers spend hours perfecting their technique in studios, gymnasiums and classrooms around the Bates campus. These accomplished students come from the U.S. and abroad to attend the Young Dancers Workshop, part of the nationally acclaimed Bates Dance Festival.

Incorporating the textures of Caribbean performance with African and American sensibilities, Cynthia Oliver’s COCo Dance Theatre performs its current evening-length work at this summer’s Bates Dance Festival. One of America’s most gifted dancemakers, Doug Varone returns to the Bates Dance Festival for his sixth creative residency since 1992. Varone’s exceptional company performs stunning new works including “Lux,” “Castles” and excerpts from a work in progress, “Chapters from a Broken Novel.” Performances take place at 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday, July 15 and 17, in Bates College’s Schaeffer Theatre, 305 College St.

The folk band Highland String Trio will continue the annual Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series on Thursday, July 22, in the Florence Keigwin Amphitheater at the college’s Lake Andrews. Midsummer Lakeside concerts start at 6 p.m. on six consecutive Thursdays in July and August. The series will continue with eclectic folk-rock group the Zulu Leprechauns, hammered-dulcimer player Harry Vayo and the Celtic-bluegrass fusion band Irish Hill.
