Brahms recital to be held at Bates

Pianists Duncan Cumming ’93, and Frank Glazer, Bates College artist-in-residence, will perform the last in a series of four concerts commemorating the the 100th anniversary of the death of composerJohannes Brahms at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

Maine Gay Men's Chorus presents 'Christmas can be a DRAG!'

The Maine Gay Men’s Chorus will present Christmas can be a DRAG! an evening holiday music to benefit the AIDS Coalition of Lewiston-Auburn, at 8 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Bates College Chapel. Conducted by Edward Reichert and accompanied by David Sherman, the Maine Gay Men’s Chorus will perform traditional favorites, including “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “White Christmas” as well as non-traditional, whimsical songs such as “I’m Wishing You a Drag Queen Christmas” and “Coming Out on Christmas.”

Cuban musicians to perform

In celebration of Latino Heritage Month, the Cuban roots fusion ensemble MEZCLA will perform at 8 p.m Nov. 18., in the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building, 130 Central Ave. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Androscoggin Valley Community Orchestra to perform family concert

The Androscoggin Valley Community Orchestra (AVCO) and the Lewiston-Auburn Youth Orchestra (LAYO) will present a family concert with guest artists Michael Miclon and Sophie Prose at 2 p.m., Nov. 22, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Admission will be $5. The Bates Jazz Band, under the direction of Mark Manduca, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19, in the Olin Arts Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Scrod Pudding performs benefit contradance at Bates

Scrod Pudding, a group of local musicians who play traditional New England, French-Canadian and Appalachian music, will perform a contradance with caller Bill Olsonfrom 8 p.m. to midnight, Friday, Nov. 7, in Chase Hal, 56 Campus Ave. Admission is $5 at the door and proceeds will benefit the AIDS Coalition of Lewiston-Auburn.

Urban economic developer to speak at Bates

William Strickland, creator of successful job training programs involving the arts, will deliver a lecture titled “The Arts, Education, Economic Growth and Community Building” as part of the Creative Approach to Public Policy lecture series at 7:30 p.m. November 17, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The public is invited and admission is free.

Ms. magazine editor to speak

Highlighting the 12th Annual Maine Women’s Studies Conference at Bates College on Nov. 15 will be the 1 p.m. keynote address in the Chapel by Marcia Ann Gillespie, editor in chief of Ms. magazine. The day-long interdisciplinary program — titled “Making Connections (Among and Between)” — features papers, panels and workshops related to feminist research and political activism.
