Bates College Museum of Art Receives Award

Through the demonstration of outstanding performance in all areas of museum operations, the Bates College Museum of Art has again been awarded the highly competitive General Operating Support award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in Washington D.C.

Theater at Bates stages six performances of 'Later Life'

Theater at Bates will stage A.R. Gurney’s “Later Life” at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 in the Black Box Theater. Jonathan Adler, a Bates sophomore from West Newton, Mass., is directing the Robinson Players production about growing and loving and whether in later life we are simply exaggerations and extensions of our earlier selves. The play also will be performed at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday Oct. 10 and 11 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 12. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. For reservations and additional ticket information, call the box office at 207-786-6161.

Bates Museum of Art hosts theremin concert

Barry Morse will perform a concert of original electronic music for theremin at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Bates College Museum of Art, 75 Russell St. Morse’s compositions were inspired by the museum’s current exhibit, “Alex Grey: Numinous Flesh”. The public is invited and admission is free.

DaPonte String Quartet to perform at Bates

The award-winning DaPonte String Quartet with guest soprano Christina Astrachan will perform in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall at 8 p.m. September 30. The program includes Schulhoff’s “String Quartet,” Schubert’s “Salve Regina” and Mozart’s “String Quartet in G Major, K. 387.” After a brief intermission, Schoenberg’s “String Quartet No. 2, Op. 10″ will conclude the concert. Soprano Christina Astrachan will perform on the Schubert and Schoenberg pieces. The public is invited and admission is free.

Theater at Bates stages six performances of "The Ugly Ducklings"

Theater at Bates will stage the world premiere of Carolyn Gage’s “The Ugly Ducklings” at 6 p.m. on September 26 in Gannett Theater. Lauren Todd, a Bates junior from Cherry Valley, Mass., is directing the drama about the destructive effects of homophobia on girls and young women. The play also will be performed at 6 p.m. on Sept. 27, 2 p.m. on Sept. 28, 8 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 4, and 2 p.m. on Oct. 5. Tickets are $2 for general admission and may be purchased at the box office. Bates Modern Dancers to stage concert

The Bates College Modern Dance Company in Concert will showcase the performance and choreography talents of student, faculty and alumni artists during Parents and Families Weekend at Batesat 8 p.m. Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, in the Schaeffer Theatre. Pianists to note 100th anniversary of Brahms' death

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of composer Johnanes Brahms, pianists Frank Glazer and Duncan Cumming ’93 will perform the composer’s complete works for solo piano in a series of concerts at Bates College Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.; Oct. 5 at 3 p.m.; Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. and Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. The public is invited to attend the performances free of charge.
