Roar Young Lions, RoarWhile I am unsure about how I feel about Jacob Zuma as a president, it was really incredible to be apart of a political rally of tens of thousands of people. Besides the size, it was kind of like one big party which included a good message and lots of singing. The fact that Zuma broke out in song and dance after his speech made some level of his popularity clear. He spent so much time making jokes about the opposition that had the audience rolling and closed his words with a performance. Bravo JZ, Bravo. |

Speech of a lifetimeTom Whalen ’86 was part of a CNN panel that discussed President Obama’s inauguration speech. Whalen, author of A Higher Purpose: Profiles in Presidential Courage, said the speech “overall [was] not a speech for the ages, but a speech for our times and the concerns people have. In many ways, it reminds me of a coach giving a halftime locker room speech to his team that’s behind in the game. What Obama saying is that we have to make improvements or adjustment in order to prevail.” |

Trying new things…I never thought when I came to Bates that I would act in a play, but that’s one of the great things about this college. If you put yourself out there, there are a ton of opportunities to try new things and get involved in programs, clubs, and activities you never imagined you would be interested in. |

The Historical Victory: Celebrated in The Atlanta University CenterI stood in line for three hours. I was nervous. This was the first time I have ever voted and I had prayed that the person I had decided to vote for would win. I couldn’t believe that I casted my ballot for an African American candidate for president. I voted for Barack Obama, a Black man and a person I believe could lead our country in the right moral and social path for at least the next 4 yrs. Never in my lifetime could I have imagined a Black person having a legitimate chance of becoming President of the United States of America. |
