Trade-agreement analysis wins book award for college sociologist

The Social Construction of Free Trade: The European Union, NAFTA, and Mercosur, an analysis written by Bates College sociologist Francesco Duina, has been named an "Outstanding Academic Title" by the editors of Choice magazine, published by the Association of College & Research Libraries. Friday, March 23, Duina is scheduled to present the book in a store appearance at Books Etc., 38 Exchange St., Portland.

Historian McCullough among May 28 Commencement speakers

Four honorary degree recipients will speak at the 140th Commencement at Bates on May 28. They are Shakespearean scholar and cultural critic Marjorie Garber, AIDS researcher David Ho, historian David McCullough and choreographer Mark Morris. The 10 a.m. commencement ceremony takes place on the historic quad in front of Coram Library.
Award-winning journalist to discuss Maine coast

Colin Woodard, an award-winning journalist for The Christian Science Monitor and The Chronicle for Higher Education, will give a talk titled "The Lobster Coast: The Past, Present and Future of Coastal Maine" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 18, in the Keck Classroom (G52), Pettengill Hall, Bates College. The public is invited to attend this talk, sponsored by the Department of History, free of charge.

Hilary Putnam, philosopher emeritus at Harvard Univerity, visits Bates College to address the topic "The Collapse of the Fact/Value Dichotomy" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 3, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave. Sponsored by the Bates English department, Putnam's talk is open to the public at no charge.
Multicultural Affairs presents poetry reading for Black History Month

A poetry reading by Jaki Shelton Green will be the first in a series of events sponsored by the Bates College Office of Multicultural Affairs in observance of Black History Month. Green, a poet in residence at Bates from Feb. 10 through 14, will read from her most recently published work, Breath of Song: New and Selected Poems (Carolina Wren Press, 2005), at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in Chase Hall Lounge, 53 Campus Ave. The reading is open to the public free of charge.
